Guatapé and the Piedra del Peñol

The classic day trip: about 75 km, an hour and a half to two and a half hours by road depending on traffic. You climb the 740 steps of El Peñol, lunch in the village (trout or bandeja paisa) and walk the umbrella street and the painted zócalos. On the private tour you leave your hotel between 7 and 8 a.m. and are back late in the afternoon. A boat ride on the reservoir and other extras are not included; we arrange them if you want.

If you would rather go on your own, we compare the options in how to get from Medellín to Guatapé.

Hacienda Nápoles

Colombia's largest theme park: a zoo with hippos, a water park and a safari, in hot lowland weather (28 to 33 °C). It is around 4 hours each way, so you leave at 5 or 6 a.m. and return at night. The "Colombian Santorini" in Doradal is on the way. We provide the private return transport; the park pass is bought separately.

Paragliding at San Félix

San Félix sits at 2,800 metres above sea level, on the mountain overlooking the Aburrá Valley. The flight is tandem with a certified pilot, 15 to 30 minutes, and you need no experience. The package includes the transfer, the flight and a tasting of pan de chocha with hot chocolate: USD $190 for one person and USD $279 for two. If the wind does not allow flying, it is rescheduled at no cost.

Coffee farm

The closest one, 30 to 40 minutes away: you pick coffee, pulp it, taste it brewed in a Chemex, a V60 and a Japanese siphon, and have a paisa lunch served on a banana leaf. One tour a day, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., with limited places. The Coffee Experience is USD $52 per person, transport not included; we quote the transfer if you need it. What about other towns?

Jardín, Jericó or Santa Fe de Antioquia can also be visited from Medellín, but they do not have a tour with a published price on this site. If they interest you, ask us on WhatsApp before you plan.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best day trip from Medellín?
For most people, Guatapé: it is the favourite and the one that makes the most of a day. With children, Hacienda Nápoles; for adrenaline, paragliding.
Can I do two day trips on the same day?
Not Guatapé and Hacienda Nápoles: each one is a full day. Paragliding and the coffee farm can share a day with a short city plan.
Which day of the week is best?
A weekday. On Sundays and public holidays the roads and villages fill up and the drive back to Medellín gets much longer.
Is the price per person?
Guatapé and Hacienda Nápoles are per vehicle, up to 4 people. Paragliding is a package priced by the number of flyers, and the coffee farm is per person without transport.
