Medellín with seniors: comfortable, unhurried tours

Medellín is very enjoyable with parents or grandparents if you pick the right plan: almost everything can be seen from a car that waits at every stop, and the demanding parts have an alternative.

In short

  • The most comfortable: the Medellín City Tour (USD $110 per vehicle, up to 4 people); you drive up to Pueblito Paisa.
  • Guatapé, yes, without climbing the rock: the village and the waterfront are worth the trip.
  • Comuna 13 is an hour and a half to two hours on foot, partly uphill with escalators.
  • The car waits at every stop, and the group sets the pace.

What can be done with almost no walking

The Medellín City Tour is the ideal plan: the car drops the group at each point —Botero Plaza, the Cathedral, Bolívar Park, Parques del Río— and you drive right up to Pueblito Paisa for the full view of the valley. You decide how much to walk at each stop. In December and January, the Christmas lights tour is seen mostly from the vehicle, with short stops (USD $125 per vehicle, up to 4 people).

Guatapé, without having to climb

The 740 steps of the Piedra del Peñol are a real effort, and nobody has to climb them for the day to be worth it. At the bottom there are cafés and viewpoints, the village of zócalos is walkable on flat ground around the square and the waterfront, and the road has viewpoint stops. If someone in the group wants to climb, the others wait at the base. The private tour is USD $200 per vehicle, up to 4 people and lasts 8 to 10 hours, with stops whenever needed.

What takes more effort

  • Comuna 13: an hour and a half to two hours on foot, with escalators for much of the climb, but with stretches of stairs and the walk down.
  • Coffee farm: you walk through the crop on mountain terrain; closed shoes.
  • Hacienda Nápoles: a 13 to 14-hour day in hot weather; for many older travellers it is too long.
  • San Félix: at 2,800 metres it is colder; if someone wants to paraglide and has a health condition, tell us beforehand so we can check with the school.

How to plan the day

Leave in the morning and be back before the mid-afternoon slump, one big plan per day and a rest day in the middle of the trip. If someone uses a wheelchair or a cane, tell us before booking so we can confirm the equipment fits in the vehicle and the stops on the route work for them.

On arrival, the private transfer (USD $55 per vehicle, up to 4 people) includes help with luggage and waiting if the flight is late. If you are more than 4, we arrange a second vehicle: see tours for groups and families.

Frequently asked questions

Which tour suits older travellers best?
The City Tour: it is done by car with short walks, and you drive up to Pueblito Paisa. Guatapé too, if anyone who does not want to climb the rock stays in the village.
Is there a lot of walking in Comuna 13?
An hour and a half to two hours with breaks. There are escalators for much of the climb, but also stretches on foot.
Can they climb the Piedra del Peñol?
It is 740 steps with landings and handrails. It depends on the person; anyone who does not climb still enjoys the village and the waterfront.
Does Medellín's altitude affect people?
Medellín is at about 1,500 metres and generally does not bother anyone. San Félix, at 2,800, is colder: bring a jacket.
