Medellín City Tour
Botero Plaza, the Metropolitan Cathedral and the Pueblito Paisa lookout — private, at your own pace.
Medellín has more places to visit than fit into a short trip. This is the list we give first-time visitors, grouped the way it is actually done: by area and by half day.
Updated 2026-09-29
It is the heart of the city and it is compact: Botero Plaza with its 23 monumental sculptures, the Rafael Uribe Uribe Palace of Culture next door, Bolívar Park and the Metropolitan Cathedral, a huge building in fired brick. The centre is a daytime plan: go early, when it is quieter and the light is good.
If you only see one part of the city, make it this one. We have a separate page on what to see at Botero Plaza.
Pueblito Paisa, on top of Cerro Nutibara, is a replica of an old Antioquian village with a 360° view over the Aburrá Valley. Late in the afternoon, when the city lights up, it is the photo everyone takes home.
Comuna 13 is the other must-see: street art, open-air escalators and a story of transformation that makes more sense with someone who knows the neighbourhood. It is an hour and a half to two hours on foot, and the murals photograph best before 11 a.m. More viewpoints in our viewpoints guide.
The Metrocable climbs from the metro over the hillside neighbourhoods up to Parque Arví, a mountain forest park. The ride is an experience in itself and you can do it on public transport; we explain it line by line in the Arví and Metrocable guide.
El Poblado and Provenza are packed with restaurants, cafés and nightlife; Laureles is the everyday city, with tree-lined streets; Envigado is calm and very paisa. They are not attractions with a ticket, but they are where you will spend your free afternoons. If you have not booked yet, see where to stay in Medellín.
Guatapé and the Piedra del Peñol are the most requested day trip: 740 steps, a view over the reservoir you will not forget and the village of painted zócalos. It is 8 to 10 hours door to door on the private Guatapé tour.
Closer to town are San Félix, where you paraglide over the valley (from USD $190 (1 person, transfer and flight included)), and the coffee experience on a farm 30 to 40 minutes away. We compare them in day trips from Medellín.
The rule that works best: one big plan per day. The centre and Pueblito Paisa go together; Comuna 13 goes on its own in the morning or combined with another city tour; Guatapé takes the whole day. With three days you see it all without rushing; with two, you choose between the full city or half the city plus Guatapé.
